“I have called him Moses!” exclaims Veronica. In America this would most likely be the announcement of a proud mother or father over their new baby boy. But this time, in Kenya, it means something very different.
This past Monday March 7th, a one-year old baby boy was found abandoned near a bush. So Veronica does what she knows God has called her to do. She takes him home to the Belwop Orphanage to raise him as her own, along with 22 other brothers and sisters. This child has no birth certificate, no medical records, no ID tag, and no ability to communicate with Veronica what his name is. So, she gives him a new name and a new life… “I have called him Moses”.
This is a story Veronica Mumbi could tell over and over again as each one of the Belwop children have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves or die, except in God’s providence they were brought into Veronica’s care. So she names them, clothes them, feeds them, enrolls them in school, teaches them about the love of Jesus, and gives them a place to call home.
Veronica does not have a large bank account from which to draw funds to feed and care for yet another orphan. Veronica does not have extra space in her tiny 3 bedroom building to place one more bed. Veronica doesn’t have a bathroom for the children, and up until a couple months ago didn’t even have a stove to cook food on.
However, Veronica is a very rich, wealthy woman. Rich in love, full of mercy, and wealthy beyond compare because of the incredible riches of God’s glory lavished upon her through faith. She daily walks in faith that God will provide because He is the father to the fatherless. Veronica could tell you story after story of God’s faithfulness to provide and miraculously meet the needs of the children at Belwop!
James 1:27 says, “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring
for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world
corrupt you.”
Veronica is a widow, and yet she spends her life caring for orphans, instead of bitterly expecting others to care for her. For her, James 1:27 isn’t just a nice thought, it is a way of life.
How often do you get to see someone actually laying down their life and taking up their cross… with joy? We get to!!!… in just a few days! We are flying to Kenya for a week-long exploratory trip to meet Veronica, the children, and see the needs of the Belwop Orphanage with our own eyes. We plan to move there later this summer/fall to renovate a larger building that will become the new Belwop Rescue Centre to house up to 100 children; however, this is dependent upon Belwop raising $100,000 to purchase the building we’ll be renovating.
